PREFACE: The content featured in this post SHOULD NOT be read into under the guise that I support what Mr. Trump said in the leaked tape. Furthermore it SHOULD NOT be construed as a defense for Mr. Trump in any way shape or form. In this post I am stating facts and my perceptions of the implications of those facts. Thank you.
It is with no surprise that the biggest headline in America right now is Donald Trump. Since he officially accepted the nomination, things have taken a turn for the worst. For months as the presumptive and then the confirmed nominee for President of United States the GOP’s relationship with Mr. Trump has been rocky, at best ever since. The nominee has been called everything but a child of God and has been the talk of New York, but there has been cause–-he’s Donald Trump.
The most recent headline has centered around a tape that was just leaked to the public. On the tape, Mr. Trump can be heard making lewd comments about a woman with another man. Like all good juicy scandal the media wasted no time in launching an all out war against Mr. Trump and with just 30 days until the general election they couldn’t have picked a better time. And as with most scandal these days, the opposing party also wasted no time in condemning Mr. Trump. If this isn’t the October Surprise I don’t know what is. I can say without a doubt that they have been sitting on this for months if not longer.
In the time since the tape was released, I have read numerous reports, blogs posts, comments, commentary and articles where the topic has been posed and the responses I have read have been absolutely baffling. I’ve seen things like:
“…the worst thing I’ve ever heard a man say…”
“…unbecoming of a presidential candidate…”
So in all of this what do I say? I listened to the tape and while lewd, I found nothing he said to be noteworthy. I read something where Joe Biden described the comments as “sexual assault”. I reject that on the principal that it actually takes away from people who are actually sexually assaulted and it also takes away from the rape culture that is chipping away at our society. Make no mistake the comments are lewd, but in the context, and having personally known people who have been sexually assaulted, raped and molested we are taking away from their actual assaults and saying “Well if you make lewd comments you’re sexually assaulting people”. That’s just wrong and Mr. Biden should be ashamed of himself.
On another note, the Fifty Shades of Gray series sold 125 million copies worldwide. We knew what these books were about, why weren’t these booked snatched off the shelf? Because it was fiction? Because it was just a story? Kudos America for getting it right yet again. And what did people have to say about an entire book full of lewd comments?
So what does all of this prove? It proves that we live in a country that is driven by sex. The media has approached this as if it is the first time in the history of man kind that somebody made lewd comments. Or is it because he’s the GOP’s pick? Speaking of the GOP- boy did they jump ship fast. Distancing themselves as quickly as they can, but can you blame them? Well they are obviously all saints who’ve never made any type of comment of this nature behind closed doors or otherwise.
The more important issue here is are we going to be defined by our past, because if not, that haughty double standard is going to get in our way. When Hillary Clinton changed her mind on her policies 9000 times the liberals said “that was a long time ago” but Donald can’t use that defense because he was 60 at the time the comments were made.
11 years ago is a long time and I’m certain I said some things that could be considered irredemable but here I am…a different man…a better man. The requirement for running for president never said you had to have a squeaky clean past. We are all humans here and we all make mistakes and I WILL NOT accept that the president has to hold himself to a higher standard–that is complete and total bs. He wasn’t running for president at the time and over the course of his life he came to see the reckless direction our nation was headed in and decided to do something about and to take that step-more than many of his denouncers have should speak volumes of his character. I think Barbara Bush said it best, “Your success as a family, our success as a society depends not on what happens in the White House, but what happens inside your house.”
We are all flawed and Christ said himself- he who is without sin shall cast the first stone. He made a mistake, he apologized now what? He’s not the most polished politician or person for that matter and he was never educated on how to be one, but find me someone on this earth who is and I’ll take all these words back. At the end of the day, we need to come to the realization that Donald Trump is not the problem–our culture is.
